As a huge Star Trek: Next Gen/Picard fan, I loved this book! I felt like Goodman did a good job of staying true to Picard's voice。 He did such a great job with the characters and the story。 I tended to forget that this wasn't actually Picard's autobiography while I was reading it! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This was another fun faux autobiography of a Star Trek captain。 I found it similar in writing style to Goodman’s other faux biography on Kirk。 Which was fine I suppose。 Mostly I suppose you’d read it only if you were a Star Trek fan。 It’s supposed to cover all the in between parts of the episodes。 But I found this not to be true。 SpoilersThe majority of this book takes place long before any events a Star Trek TNG fan would be aware of。 Think of this as mostly back story filler of the character This was another fun faux autobiography of a Star Trek captain。 I found it similar in writing style to Goodman’s other faux biography on Kirk。 Which was fine I suppose。 Mostly I suppose you’d read it only if you were a Star Trek fan。 It’s supposed to cover all the in between parts of the episodes。 But I found this not to be true。 SpoilersThe majority of this book takes place long before any events a Star Trek TNG fan would be aware of。 Think of this as mostly back story filler of the character of Jean Luc Picard。 Which again is fine。 The last 40% or so of the book is spent in the TNG era。 With only one chapter really outlining the events of the series and another one for the films。 A major criticism is that the events of Best of Both Worlds is treated more as a footnote than the important part of the characters development。 Same with the events of Chain of Command and Picards torture。 More time spent reflecting on moments like those would’ve been a great service to the fans。 Also a minor criticism but not really。 Goodman puts a lot of elements of Star Trek Enterprise in throughout the book。 It’s done tastefully but they are still there and still noticeable。 Perhaps a bit of revenge for the series finale of Star Trek Enterprise? 。。。more

A fine tie-in story for fans of the shows and movies, but not if you are a fan of the post next-generation books as it ignores them。

Review 74。 The Autobiography Of Jean-Luc Picard by David A。 GoodmanIn September 1987, Star Trek The Next Generation began to air on TV。 I was 6 years old and watching the adventures of the USS Enterprise D under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard with my mum by my side。 This was my first experience of Star Trek 34 years ago and I was hooked forever。 When I heard this book came out, I knew it would be one that I would buy and it would also become a favourite book。 Telling the story of Jean-Lu Review 74。 The Autobiography Of Jean-Luc Picard by David A。 GoodmanIn September 1987, Star Trek The Next Generation began to air on TV。 I was 6 years old and watching the adventures of the USS Enterprise D under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard with my mum by my side。 This was my first experience of Star Trek 34 years ago and I was hooked forever。 When I heard this book came out, I knew it would be one that I would buy and it would also become a favourite book。 Telling the story of Jean-Luc Picard's life, this book fills in gaps about his life that have never been revealed in the series。Filling in the details of how he became Captain and the loss of his 1st ship, the Stargazer before becoming captain of the USS Enterprise。 This book is absolutely fantastic and if like me, you are a fan of Star Trek The Next Generation, I recommend you buy this book as I'm sure you will enjoy it。 Make it so!5****** 。。。more

I am very glad the author committed around 70% of the book to Picard's pre-Enterprise era。 It felt like most important part, giving us an insight into the things that shaped him and lead him to become a man we see on our screens, as well as his personal feelings towards his adolescence from the perspective of time。 The Enterprise and after era, which took about 30% of the book, felt more like a series of quick flashbacks, briefly going through Picard's time on Enterprise-D and later, and even th I am very glad the author committed around 70% of the book to Picard's pre-Enterprise era。 It felt like most important part, giving us an insight into the things that shaped him and lead him to become a man we see on our screens, as well as his personal feelings towards his adolescence from the perspective of time。 The Enterprise and after era, which took about 30% of the book, felt more like a series of quick flashbacks, briefly going through Picard's time on Enterprise-D and later, and even though it was probably the weakest part of the book, I still enjoyed it and frankly I don't know what could be the alternative - maybe 1000 pages retelling the 7 seasons of the show and 4 movies but I personally would get really bored with that and I don't suppose anyone is reading this book before watching the series。 I think the author did his best with portraying that part of Picard's life (Though I am wondering why 'All Good Things。。。' was skipped)Overall this book brings the character of Jean-Luc Picard to life and gives us (even though, it is not in the canon of the show), not only a detailed description of his life pre-captaincy and pre-Enterprise, but also makes him feel even more human, which some of the episodes, in my opinion, failed to show。anyway, i love bald ppl<3 。。。more

One of the best Starfleet officers。 I grew up with watching Star Trek TNG so I just had to pick up this book and read more about Picard’s life。 It was a great read to me, though in the last few chapters it fast forward quite quickly。 I would advise to watching the show and movies beforehand because it can be a bit confusing if you are not really caught up with it。 Other than that, I absolutely enjoyed to seeing what made him, well… him! This was an amazing autobiography! The world of Star Trek novels is fraught with all kinds of issues, ranging from the pulp nature of their writing through to the way they run often against the canonical aspects of the sci-fi franchise's universe。 When well written and produced so as to reinforce or expand upon what has gone before on TV and film they can be very enjoyable。 Such is (for the most part) the case with 'The Autobiography of Jean Luc Picard'。Of course to enjoy this book it helps if one is a fan of Star Trek, and there The world of Star Trek novels is fraught with all kinds of issues, ranging from the pulp nature of their writing through to the way they run often against the canonical aspects of the sci-fi franchise's universe。 When well written and produced so as to reinforce or expand upon what has gone before on TV and film they can be very enjoyable。 Such is (for the most part) the case with 'The Autobiography of Jean Luc Picard'。Of course to enjoy this book it helps if one is a fan of Star Trek, and there is plenty of content herein that is made more engaging due to how the author refers to characters and events that have come before on TV and in film。 Goodman does his utmost to integrate as many familiar elements as he can into the story, and to be honest he succeeds because when done they are relatively seamless and apt to the narrative。 One might quibble about the way the relationship between Picard and Beverley Crusher is depicted, and it has to be said that the ending of the book runs off at a significant tangent from what is recounted in more recent Trek lore。 However that's not enough to cause one to reject the work in toto。That Goodman spends much of the novel recounting Picard's life and work prior to the 'real' Captain of the USS Enterprise-D is where the novel is at its best, and perhaps the publishers could have asked the author to focus only on that period in the protagonist's fictional life。 However I am sure the perceived wishes of millions of fans of Star Trek who created the market for such a spin-off book ensured that this 'autobiography' would be written as it was。All up, as a piece of light reading that ties in with a hugely successful science fiction franchise 'The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard' is a very enjoyable book。 It may have a limited audience outside the Trekkie fandom but who cares。。。live long and prosper J-L! 。。。more

This book was absolutely delightful。Roughly 70% of the book focuses on Picard's life before TNG, on the young, a little too self-confident young man he has been before almost dying and having a superficial heart helped settle his perspective。 His youthful (one might call it arrogance ;) cockiness is tempered by the insight of the grown, wise man who suffered through too much to still believe in the same luxury of ignorance as the unexperienced young man he once was had。From all the Star Trek ser This book was absolutely delightful。Roughly 70% of the book focuses on Picard's life before TNG, on the young, a little too self-confident young man he has been before almost dying and having a superficial heart helped settle his perspective。 His youthful (one might call it arrogance ;) cockiness is tempered by the insight of the grown, wise man who suffered through too much to still believe in the same luxury of ignorance as the unexperienced young man he once was had。From all the Star Trek series, I grew up with Picard as my Captain, as the one who - for me - impersonates the peaceful, curious, understanding and altruistic traits of Starfleet and the Federation。 Reading his autobiography was both a trip down memory lane and at the same time also a solidifaction of what I want to achieve in my life as a grown woman。 。。。more

The attention put into the detail of this book to make it look like it was written by the man himself was absolutely fantastic。 The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard mainly tells the story of his years prior to the Enterprise as a child, in Starfleet Academy, and on the Stargazer。 These were all things that the series covered here and there, but the author, who is also involved in Seth McFarlane's series The Orville, expands upon them and doesn't focus his time on the Enterprise D and after。 Over The attention put into the detail of this book to make it look like it was written by the man himself was absolutely fantastic。 The Autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard mainly tells the story of his years prior to the Enterprise as a child, in Starfleet Academy, and on the Stargazer。 These were all things that the series covered here and there, but the author, who is also involved in Seth McFarlane's series The Orville, expands upon them and doesn't focus his time on the Enterprise D and after。 Overall, I really enjoyed the story。 It felt true to character, but time did move fast, which is understandable considering that this book is less than 300 pages。 It covers his life until 90。 Furthermore, this was definitely written before Picard because (view spoiler)[Q changes B4 into Data so it's not like he died (hide spoiler)]。 Many characters appeared from each of the different series as well, and although I appreciate some of them, others seemed gratuitous and unbelievable。。。like the author just wanted to put in these characters just to put in the characters。 Recommended for fans of Star Trek of course! It wasn't quite what I was expecting。As a lover of Sir Patrick Stewart and of his role as Cpt。 Picard in TNG, I was excited to pick up the book。 I've seen all of the show, but that's the extent of my fandom, and so I was eager to really learn about his youth, time spent at the Academy, and his life pre-Enterprise。 Things more hardcore fans might already know from other numerous sources。 This portion of the book didn't disappoint。 And while the snapshot-esque sections and time hops made everythin It wasn't quite what I was expecting。As a lover of Sir Patrick Stewart and of his role as Cpt。 Picard in TNG, I was excited to pick up the book。 I've seen all of the show, but that's the extent of my fandom, and so I was eager to really learn about his youth, time spent at the Academy, and his life pre-Enterprise。 Things more hardcore fans might already know from other numerous sources。 This portion of the book didn't disappoint。 And while the snapshot-esque sections and time hops made everything feel rather disjointed, it made it a quick book to read。The last part of the book, however, not quite the final third to quarter, is really just an awkward mash of random moments taken from episodes of the show。 It was a jittery, jumpy sort of mess。 I can appreciate what the author attempted to do, and goodness knows that Picard had a long, long life and a lot going on, but the end result was just kind of a rush job。 So while the 'snapshots' we got were nice, it kind of felt like the author was doing a disservice to the character。 And to that point, while the writing is ok, I feel like it would have been more apt to call the book a biography。 It certainly sounds like someone is writing about him more than it sounds like he's writing about himself。I didn't really feel like the writing had Picard's voice most of the time。 Which is honestly probably the bigger letdown。Still, it was an interesting read, and fairly quick。 Overall, ok。 。。。more

Picard should have found someone to ghost-write his autobiography and bring it to life。 Maybe Q? This almost went into the WNF pile, it was so dull。

I enjoyed this quite a bit! We get to learn a lot about Picard's childhood and family life, his time at the Academy, and his career before captaining the Enterprise 1701-D; about 2/3 of the book accounts for this。 Lots of insight into his character, and the events that shaped his personality。 For the Enterprise bits, the additional information on familiar stories is good geeky fun, though I do wish some of it went into more depth。 I really enjoyed getting to know Picard better, and appreciate th I enjoyed this quite a bit! In a number of ways this is pretty much a celebratory biography, complete with ghostwriter – David A Goodman, listed as editor。 It’s in many ways a light, easy read as the most disturbing parts (for me relating to the Borg and Locutus episodes) are quickly dealt with as the story moves on。 The first part of the book especially is also interrupted a number of times by Picard’s expression of regrets over being several varieties of an ass in his relative youth (how many of us have been down that ro In a number of ways this is pretty much a celebratory biography, complete with ghostwriter – David A Goodman, listed as editor。 It’s in many ways a light, easy read as the most disturbing parts (for me relating to the Borg and Locutus episodes) are quickly dealt with as the story moves on。 The first part of the book especially is also interrupted a number of times by Picard’s expression of regrets over being several varieties of an ass in his relative youth (how many of us have been down that road!)。 If you are a devotee of the movies and tv series (multiple), you will find yourself on familiar ground as the story progresses。 As far as I could detect, the autobiography is true to the collective sources while leaving enough room not to prevent the possibility of other adventures appearing in new films, tv series, books, or short stories。 Personally, I think this is why it reads a bit light rather than as a heavy detailed more personal examination by Jean Luc Picard of his life and careers。 。。。more

A Good Alternate HistoryAs we know, JL has gone on to new adventures as chronicled in Star Trek: Picard but this book did a nice job of filling in some of the mortar around the bricks of Picard’s life。 Overall, a good effort and enjoyable read。 The Data storyline at the end was greatly appreciated。 Thanks to the author for his efforts。

The autobiography fills some gaps and provided insights to what Picard was thinking/feeling。 Thoroughly enjoyed it!

This was a gift from my daughter and a fun read。 It was like taking all the Easter eggs connected to Picard from every series and the movies and stitching them together, with a good dose of speculation, in a well written narrative。 A fun journey for the Trekkie。

Really enjoyed this prequel, tie-in, and sequel to TNG。 The only disappointing thing about it is that the ending is contradicted by the new Picard show。 But still a very fun and touching read for those that love TNG。

Pretty good; although it was a bit “summary。” It fills in the earlier years of Picard’s life, and basically summarized a lot of things that anyone like myself who has been obsessed with the series already knew。 I was reminded of what all the writing teachers say, “don’t tell, show!” It was fun to read, I really enjoyed it (did it in about 24 hours), but I would still like a little more depth and characterization。

I think David Goodman (enjoyed his Federation: The First 150 Years more) bit off a bit more than he could chew with this one。 At times there are flashes of what it could’ve been (particularly his introductions of Guinan and Data, plus the crafty way he sneaks in Phlox from Enterprise), but at times he ignores or overlooks important details (and outright omits the events of Insurrection, not to mention the actual important roles of characters like Admirals Satie and Leyton, both of whom he libera I think David Goodman (enjoyed his Federation: The First 150 Years more) bit off a bit more than he could chew with this one。 At times there are flashes of what it could’ve been (particularly his introductions of Guinan and Data, plus the crafty way he sneaks in Phlox from Enterprise), but at times he ignores or overlooks important details (and outright omits the events of Insurrection, not to mention the actual important roles of characters like Admirals Satie and Leyton, both of whom he liberally employs earlier), and never really nails the character of Picard himself, and treats the whole exercise as an episodic novel experience rather than as memories。(Of course, in hindsight, with the TV show Picard contradicting some things, such as the meaningless decision by Q to arbitrarily resurrect Data, though Goodman has no feel at all for Q, it’s also the weird timing of this that compelled me to read it in the first place, in part to see his version of where things ended。)I still enjoyed the results, just not as much as I might’ve。 Would be more fun for someone who hasn’t been a fan for decades, as an introduction, perhaps。 。。。more
